Repost (because I'm an idiot)
Wednesday, November 7, 2007
This is a repost of the post below because of reasons I can't be bothered explaining!

I should really post more, regardless of whether I have new material to show or not.

So half a year just went by. What? Yeah, half a year. So what's happening about SRPG2? Plenty of people still ask me on MSN and plenty of e-mails still come in. What is the true current status of that game? What percent complete is it? Did you forget about SRPG2? That last one always makes me laugh a bit, to think that people imagine that I one day woke up and was all "Stick RPG 2? What's that? Have a damn clue what you're yapping on about." All questions and very little answers. Kinda like . But if I may, allow me to put it bluntly:

I'm gonna say that the project is currently on hold.
Graphics-wise, I'd say that the game is about 60-70% complete.
We didn't forget.

So what to post about now? I'd rather not turn this into a depressing personal daily blog thing (daily? Ha!! Sometimes I crack myself up). Well, while I try to think of something I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone for all the supportive e-mails, and a massive special thanks goes to all those that submitted graffiti art. Some of it was really awesome and there was some really varied stuff. It pains me to think people aren't gonna see them in the game, at least not for a while. I have integrated them into the current artwork, but I meant just seeing them in the game for real.

Let's talk about
Pillage the Village for a sec.

What a crazy game. In a good way of course. It really shows how far XGen has progressed when compared side by side with Castle, both graphically and technically. There's a lot of stuff happening on screen there and it still runs pretty well on old-ish machines. Speaking of visuals, they weren't always gonna have that anime-ish look. Very early into the project I did a couple bits of artwork while the look of the game was being established. You can view what the common peasant would have looked like right here. As a matter of fact, we did use this model in very early builds of the game and I had even thrown together some quick animation for him. Unfortunately, I just didn't have the time to put into the project. I would have loved to have worked on it, but I believe this was near-ish when I was starting out on my current job, or maybe something else was keeping me otherwise occupied - I can't remember. Probably Deal or No Deal.

Yes, I'm talking about the game show. No no, I wasn't watching it, god know, though I understand it's very popular. It is here in the UK anyway. So why do I bring up Deal or No Deal (or just "Dond" as we call it in the office)? Probably because my current job seems to require me to think up new ways of advertising the online slot game we have of it on our website. Honestly, everytime someone mentions "Deal or No Deal" to me I die a little bit on the inside. One day I'll implode and everyone will wonder what the hell just happened. And I when I say implode, I don't mean I'll go crazy and flip out - I just mean my body might collapse inwards and set on fire, and everyone will be awfully confused while my spirit floats away to a better place where Deal or No Deal doesn't exist.

All said, it's a pretty big brand and it feels pretty cool to be working on it. Not so cool after about a million different concepts, but still cool. If you live in the UK and use Hotmail, you've probably seen my banners and possibly been extremely pissed off with them as they are pretty graphically intense.

DEAL OR NO DEAL - PLAY OR WE'LL CRASH YOUR COMPUTER!

I just said I didn't want to turn this into a personal blog thing, but looks like I just screwed that up too. Sorry, I'll only go on for a little more.

Anyway, there's really no need to read inbetween the lines - I'm actually still very happy with my current job and can't imagine me leaving for a while. So long as I'm learning new stuff then I'm mostly happy. I can honestly say that the working environment is one of the best I've worked, and the Dreamcast hooked up to the projector in the games room? That's just icing on an already sweet cake.

I've written quite a lot, but 6 months is a long time... I feel compelled to write more.

Let's about the iPhone for a bit.

When it comes to phones I'm a complete caveman. I've owned my current phone for at least 3 maybe 4 years, and even then it was handed down to me from a friend after he had had it for a while. It needs recharging every 2 days because it seems the battery is dying out. The phone itself is dying out as sometimes the screen will completely white out, making it impossible to read any text messages or do anything else otherwise useful. Like using the calculator. Also, the camera is broken. But it was crap anyway, so I don't miss it that much.

So while I hear a lot of people criticise the iPhone for half baked features, or whatever, I honestly don't know, it still looks like an extremely sexy device to me. Surfing the net from anywhere is, ya know, good, even if the connection is pretty slow. Unfortunately, the Safari web browser doesn't have the Flash player integrated into it, which would mean not being able to play your super favourite XGen games where ever you want. Another major problem is the £35 a month contract. That's a damn lot and I've also never been on contract with any phone before. Not that I can't afford - I just don't like that hanging over my head all the time. Having the NES emulator on there would be so awesome though...

I still want one. If I'm gonna buy one (they're released here on Friday) it'd be the first Apple product I'll have ever bought.

Right, gotta cut this off abruptably as I'm going brain dead here.

Until next time!

Little Big Planet looks great
Wednesday, April 18, 2007
But I still don't feel like spending £400 on a games console for one game that isn't going to be out until 2008.

Hey, that reminds me!

So 4 months have gone by. Zoom, boom - just like that. Real-life work (as in, my full-time job) has been keeping me very busy and leaves me very tired and drained by the time any free time comes along that would otherwise give me a chance to work on SRPG2. Let's make one thing clear now - I don't have any new material to show you. The last time I updated was, literally, the last time I worked on this project.

But it's always in my mind. I imagine there are lots of people that have come to the conclusion that I have abandoned/forgotton about this project. As much as this project has dragged on it still has lots of potential to do things on a level that aren't touched with other pure Flash games.

I still want THIS to happen...

Unfortunately, I'm simply one of those that wishes there were more hours in the day. Well, I only have to wait a few million years, then maybe we'll gain another hour. The world IS slowing down, after all. I don't think people will be interested in SRPG2 by then though.

Anyway, time she is a wasting - stuff to do! Post laters (not in, like, a million months time)!

Links of workage
Monday, December 4, 2006
Well, something had to go wrong - here are the proper links. Luckily, not much of the post below was destroyed - just the words "extremely" and "rough" which I tried to link, but failed.

Very cheap and nasty media update
Monday, December 4, 2006
Hi again everyone,

As promised I said I would post later today (although it's now 1am of the next day - whatever). I've honestly not been able to work on this environment for a while, so despite the amount of time that's passed by since I finished the Ghetto, this still looks VERY rough.

Click the links to view the images, but be warned - they are .

There's not much else to say - it goes without saying that this area is far from complete - I've hardly even got the layout finalised. I know a lot of you are disappointed and unimpressed, but this isn't looking much different to what the Ghetto looked like before I started to go through the all important touch-up phase like I do with every other environment.

Here's a little idea - how about every few days I work on this piece I will take screenshots and show you the process of how I make these things go from "ugh!" to "whoa!"? I do get a lot of e-mails and people chatting to me asking me how I do this or how I do that, and I think showing the process will clear up a lot of things.

Again, sorry for the lack of updates. Even though we're coming close to Christmas I will try and keep you all updated.

The quest continues!

Overdue
Monday, December 4, 2006
Hi everyone.

Just letting you know that I'm still alive. I've been getting a lot of e-mails about the lack of updates, which is totally understandable! I'm writing this post from work, so I can't upload any new Media right now, but come back later (like, within the same day) and I'll have another post with a bit of Media! It won't be much though... I've been too busy with other projects to really give SRPG2 the time.

Progress is slow as usual!

Words and stuff
Wednesday, October 11, 2006
Hey kids! I'm back!

Sorry about the lack of updates recently. I could sit here and make up, I mean err... tell you my perfectly good excuses as to why there was no update for 2 whole months. Needless to say I've received a lot of unhappy e-mails about this situation. Sorry about that!

But anyways, I'm back in the swing of things now... work continues to progress at it's usual pace. I'm digging into the Downtown area of the StickRPG 2 city now with it's tall office buildings and such. The style should hopefully look a little more modern compared to what's been seen before with it being the part of the city the business folk in their fancy suits are gonna be walking around in. I could show an image of what I have of it so far, but honestly it's really not much and very very unfinished right now, it's hardly worth showing. Give it a couple weeks, eh?

Last time I posted Media about the Ghetto I got a lot of people asking me how you'll be able to see what's going on behind those tall buildings. Of course we've considered this and here's a shaky version of one of the solutions. It's not final at all so don't judge it too harshly - I literally just threw this thing together tonight!

You can right click and zoom and and such and press the spacebar to change the time of day.

Have fun!

More than the Ghetto
Friday, August 11, 2006
Thanks for all the feedback on the Ghetto picture I uploaded. Comments have been quite mixed, varying from "omg its freakin' awesome!!!!" to "Why's it so clean looking?". I've been damn tired all week, so haven't been able to work on it as much as I would like, but I still got some time in there.

An interesting question, which I thought had an obvious answer, was if this Ghetto was the only outdoor area in Stick RPG 2. The answer is no. Many moons ago I posted pictures of a couple other outdoor areas which you will be able to explore. People thought these were other cities, but what we're making is one BIG city for you to explore.

Here's an image I threw together to give you a better idea.

As you can see, the outdoor areas join up to form a larger city. The game won't look like this - the image is just a mock up. You'll still travel through them as large sections.

Is this making sense?

Anyway, I hope cleared things up a bit.

In other news, a friend of mine made a sasquatch on her wall using the shadows of her fingers. This hasn't got anything to do with SRPG2, it was just a request. For the Sasquatch.

All your base are belong to us.

Shut up.

More of the Ghetto
Monday, July 31, 2006
Wow, 3 updates in as many weeks. I must be on a roll.

Okay, so this Ghetto is taking longer than I had predicted! There's still a lot of small details I want to get in there but right now I think most people could look at it and think it's finished. Me though? I'm not convinced... it still needs more stuff.

Regardless, here's a screenshot of the whole Ghetto.

What do you think? If you think it's bad or good or whatever, send me and e-mail.

-Stuart Hart

Not the update I wanted to do, but an update none-the-less
Tuesday, July 18, 2006
I haven't finished the Ghetto yet, but I have still made some progress. Plus, I keep thinking up ideas and realising other things that makes this environment require more work that I initially thought.

Anyway, I don't have much time to rant so here's another teaser picture of the ghetto.

Have a nice week you lot - I'll be totally out of action until Sunday as I'm going home to visit my folks.

-Stu

Hmm... been a while!
Wednesday, July 12, 2006
Sorry about that. Y'all keep talking to me on MSN anyways! Of which some of you I give minimal reply... that is, to say, no reply at all.

I've been really motivated on SRPG2 recently - the past few days have been great in terms of what I'm putting out. I'd say I've done way more in the past week than I have in the past 2 months! Maybe someone slipped something into my drink and it's having a long-lasting effect. Having said that though, I'm still working on this freakin' Ghetto but it's very near completion now. It's probably the most complex city area I'll be doing anyway (I hope!) so it's good to get the biggest thing out the way now.

At this rate, I think I'll be done with this Ghetto area in 2-3 days. This means the next News post will come a lot sooner than usual.

For now, here's a little teaser image to hopefully keep you a little happier. Yeah, it's only a small update, but as soon as I'm finished with this Ghetto I'll post up the full thing for you all to look at your hearts content at whatever zoom you like and such! As you can see, the ground around the buildings is still grass. Pavements, lampposts, everything that goes on the floor... these are the things that I'll be working on to wrap this complex area up.

In other news, we might be posting something interactive we all want you to have a little play with. Don't get too excited - it's purely for test purposes. Though I did mention about the optimisation break-throughs we had a few months back, this is only on our machines and we may want to see how the whole thing holds up on other peoples machines. Anyway, like I said - we MIGHT post something like that but then again we might not!

Talk at ya later,

-Stuart Hart

Can't answer e-mails
Wednesday, May 24, 2006
Hi folks - couple things to inform you with:

The 'net connection in our house has gone down (well, it's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the sketch of it) and I don't know how soon it'll be back up. This means I won't be able to answer any e-mails for a while - I didn't even get chance to answer half of what WAS sent to me before the last News post! If you're wondering, I'm writing this post from work and while I COULD answer your e-mails from here I won't... because I'm at work!

Which brings me to the second thing - please don't message me on MSN when I have the "@ work" message next to my name. Unless you're going to say something that will save me from a very imminent death I'm honestly not very interested because I'm too busy at work.

Ok, back to work for me...

-Stu

-- Insert Excuse here --
Wednesday, May 17, 2006
Obviously the first thing I must say is an apology to all of you for letting you down with the "at least 1 post a month" thing as it's now been a whole 2 months since the last News update! Sorry about that. I've got quite a pile of e-mails lying in my Inbox that all need replying to, but I just haven't had the time to get to it! I'm sure they're all angry e-mails. I'll reply to them after I finish up this post.

Things have been very busy on my end and I'm only just starting to get used to it. While I was at GDC (which was awesome by the way) I received word that I had landed one of the jobs I had interviewed for, so as soon as I got back I was flat hunting quite frantically, having to get my stuff down from Leeds to London (Leeds is in West Yorkshire), blah blah blah...

Basically, I live in London now and I now have a full-time job. Before GDC I just had a weekend dead-end job and all my time during the rest of the week was free (or spent job hunting). So now I have even less time to work on SRPG2. It's kinda tough to wake up and go to work and then come home to MORE work, but there's no way I'm gonna leave SRPG2 to gather dust.

Speaking of, we've made some pretty heavy adjustments to the engine in the past couple weeks or so. At first we were worried that this game would have to be played on the Low Quality setting so it would run at a more reasonable framerate, but recent optimisations have had us go from something like 10 frames-per-second to 70+!! So we're pretty excited about that. Especially for me - means I have to worry less about if I'm putting in too much detail to the graphics. Which I was!

So that's good News to all ya'll out there that have slower machines - it should run very playable even on High Quality. And if it doesn't, you can always put it to Low Quality and I'm sure it'll be fine then. And if it STILL doesn't run ok... sheesh, what are you on, like, a 386?

Unfortunately, that's all the News I have on SRPG2. It's still chugging along and it'll get finished in a few months I hope! I know I just said a few months, but for God's sake, don't ask me for a release date!!

That's all for now folks. For me right now, it's back to preventing the bees getting into my room through the floorboards.

Like I said, I've been busy!

-Stuart Hart

Away for a week
Friday, March 17, 2006
Straight to it:

1. Sorry, no Media update today! Will have one next time hopefully!

2. Thanks for all your suggestions and ideas for the ghetto! I'll definately be applying some of them. There were some good ideas and some bad ideas... most of them kinda in-between ;) Anyway, you can stop sending them now!

3. Apparently there's this thing called Game Developers Conference in San Jose that I have to attend, so I'm gonna be away for a week and won't be able to reply to your e-mails as fast as usual. In fact, I'll probably just leave em until I come back on the 25th.

4. I might be starting a new job when I come back. So what does that mean for StickRPG2? Nothing really - I can still work on it as I always have.

Ok, that's all, cya!

-
Been busy, yo
Saturday, February 25, 2006
Been getting plenty of e-mails from people complaining about the lack of News updates. Sorry, but I've simply been a bit busy - and out of town - recently, so couldn't post.

First of all, stop asking me when this game is out. I still don't know. I get tons of people writing in trying to get around the question by saying something like, "I'm not here to ask when the game is out, but do you have an estimate of when it will be out, like, which month?". Well, that's actually the exact same question but just reworded a bit!

You may or may not be surprised to know that SRPG2 is not XGen focal project at this moment. That's why nobody knows a possible release date. There was actually a time when we were targetting June 2003 or 2004, I can't remember, but then stuff happened that got in the way such as me getting into a big mess of course work at University at the time, or when we decided a multiplayer version of the fighting system in SRPG2 would be cool (and it is, as some of you are fully aware). Once we begin to go full steam on SRPG2, we may have a release date. The only person working on it at the moment is, well, me as far as I know. And I'm definately not working on it 100% right now. If that doesn't make you happy, well, sucks to be you!

But otherwise, yeah, stop asking me. When I know, you'll know. Now let that be the end of that question, or any other release-date related questions.

Not much else to comment on except this small and cheap media update. Again, there are other buildings I've done, but I don't wanna be showing them yet. This is still the Ghetto area I'm working on! Hey, what sort of things would YOU like to see in the Ghetto area? E-mail me and tell me what you're thinking. Think it through a little bit though, ya know, don't go suggesting something I can't actually do on my artistic side of things. An example of something not to suggest would be, "I'd like to see gangs and people mugging each other and stuff". That's a coding job, not a graphic design thing.

What am I thinking? You're all gonna ignore that and just send in all your crazy random ideas like you normally do!

Small Media update
Friday, January 20, 2006
I feel pretty exhausted right now, so I don't think I have the energy to rant as much as usual. Let's just cut to the chase.

Oh yeah, and Happy New Year! I didn't post about it before, so better late than never I suppose.

Anyway - Media update! A small one... click here.
Quite a bit better to what it was before I think. This building is now pretty much complete.

No... I wasn't spending all this time since StickArena finished working on this single building...

Ok, that's enough - 'til next time, I'm Stuart Hart, SRPG2s artist and animator, not the coder as many people seem to mistakenly believe!

-Stuart Hart

Merry Christmas!!
Sunday, December 25, 2005
Or, merry boxing day or something as it is currently 4am of the 26th of December 2005 here. Maybe it's still Christmas day where you are, I dunno. Regardless, hope you've had a nice time, got whatever presents you were hoping for and had a nice meal! Unfortunately for me, a new motherboard is a bit expensive to ask anyone for (my PC has decided to go a bit crazy in the past month or so) but I'd feel guilty if anyone spent that much on me anyway!

I'd also feel a bit guilty not giving you any new Media, so here you go. I know, it's small, but I can't give too much away, sorry!

And... that's all for now I think. If the link is bust or you just want to send me a comment, send me an e-mail and if it's interesting enough I might reply! (Please, no "is that all you've done??" e-mails, because obviously it's not)

Enjoy the rest of your holidays!

The truth
Thursday, November 24, 2005
News post time again. I'll say right off the bat that I've no new Media. So if you were hoping to see a picture of the city populated with hundreds of individual stick characters you can interact with, you're out of luck.

The truth is, I've been job hunting quite a bit and have had little time to work on anything XGen related. I'm also trying to create my own website which is sorta something you really need when applying for jobs as a graphic artist. Surprisingly enough, I don't have a whole lot of experience in Web Design, but I think I'll manage alright.

So stay tuned, as one day hopefully soon, stuhart.com (stuarthart.com was taken, unfortunately) might just go live and you'll be able to see my crap on there!

Aaaaaaanyway...

As some of you would know by now, StickArena has been released. It's pretty damn awesome I reckon - I'm very pleased with how it's turned out. Great for the occasional play, but don't come moaning to us claiming it's boring after playing it for hours and hours each day. What do you expect?? Any game (well, a few exceptions) after a few hours of play becomes pretty boring. For a game you get to play for free, you sure know how to complain! If you haven't played it though, what are you waiting for? It's available NOW, it's FREE, it's ONLINE, you don't NEED to make an account, provide an e-mail address or ANYTHING. It's quick and painless.

Plus it's the first game that features my animation :)

So? Go play it now. Maybe you'll even see me in there sometimes.

Stick Arena
Friday, October 28, 2005
It's been... 31 days? Some months have 31 days so I think I'm still on time with whole at-least-1-post-a-month thing! If it's longer than 31 days... well... whatever.

So, in case you didn't know, Stick Arena is the new game very close to completion here at XGenStudios.com! We've been making this game in total secrecy up until recently and it's now a pretty darn exciting time as this game is so close to completion!

What's it about then? Stick Arena is an online multiplayer shoot-em-up, created entirely in Flash. You run around offices, construction yards or whatever trying to blow each others brains out with whatever weapon you can find. You create an account, get connected to the lobby and create your own public or private game to play with your friends. Or you can skip all that riff-raff and just hit the Quick Start button to get straight to the point. Some people are playing it already, and the feedback has been amazing! The game is only available to specific users at the moment though! But rest assured, when the game is officially released, anyone anywhere around the world with the Flash Player 8 plug-in installed in their browser can play the game!

So if you were wondering why there's been such little progress on SRPG2 - the game we lead you all to believe we were 100% working on - well, now you know! Though, if you've played the SRPG2 fighting system demo, then you'll realise that Stick Arena came from how cool that fighting system was turning out to be.

So hey, why not check out the trailer? That's cool all on it's own. Plus it's got some funky footage of the game of course!

Speaking of games right now, have you had a chance to play Shadow of the Colossus? The sequel to one of the best games ever made that no one seems to know about? It's pretty awesome...

But I SUPPOSE I should be talking about StickRPG2, eh? I SUPPOSE I should show you a bit of Media, eh...? Well, I DID say we have been working on Stick Arena mostly - well, completely - but because I'm so damn good to you people I've still been working on some graphics for StickRPG2 and got at least a few things I can show you... (NOTE: These are in Swf format, so you'll be able to right click and zoom in and see all the wonderful detail!)

Here's a big fat block of flats. This one's not actually finished yet - plenty of detail can be added in there when I look at it now, but most of the essential stuff is already set in.
This one's not finished either. It'll have an assortment of buildings you can go in and do stuff. Upon closer inspection, I'm sure you can tell what that first one is! We may have to excluse that one from the younger players. Oh what fun it'll be animating the... "workers" in there! Check out that bumpy looking roof though... damn I'm good.
And this garage here is actually complete! Not much to say about this one... look at the grime! Yummy.

That's all for now folks! Hopefully I'll be finishing up the rest of the outdoor area these buildings belong to and I'll MAYBE show it to you if you ask nicely. It's a big outdoor areea though, so give me a chance or ten! Send comments and such to the usual address.

I'll reply as much as I can, but for now, I need sleep!

Seriously, enough is enough!

Either the Sept 15th news post isn't showing up for some people or those same people are just ignoring that same post, but please stop sending me your translations of that hard-to-read e-mail I posted about on the 14th Sept! I'm still getting e-mails about it almost 2 weeks after I posted about it and even then sometimes the translation is wrong! Some people realise their mistake though, firing off another e-mail to give a quick apology, which I do appreciate :)

So seriously now - please stop sending e-mails about that subject unless you have something else interesting to say!

In other news, Graffiti submissions have kinda come to a stop now, so as of the start of next month, I'll no longer be accepting ANY new submissions! After then, if I see an e-mail with an attachment in my inbox with "graffiti", or something similar, in the topic it goes straight to the trash - no questions asked! So if you were hoping to get your fancy art into the game but your submission is made on or after October 1st... tough!

Ok, I'll do a proper News Post - possible with some new Media - later!

-Stuart Hart

Thank you, kindly.

Okie dokie - I got plenty of replies to the whole "What does this e-mail mean" thing - thanks to everyone that successfully fully translated the super secret encrypted message that my uber computer and language skills could not crack.

But credit to "Josh Wolens" who was the first to get his e-mail in!

Ok ok?? So you can all stop e-mailing me about it now...

About Graffiti Submissions:

I'm still accepting them. I've got plenty at the moment, but I don't feel like closing the whole thing down at the moment! Just thought I'd update you on that situation as I've had a few people asking me about this concern.

Ok, that's all, thank you!

Longest News Post?
Wednesday, September 14, 2005
Yes, I understand there is a 2-button mouse developed by Apple called "Mighty Mouse" so stop e-mailing me about it! I did actually make a very quick search to see if Apple did make 2-button mouses themselves and when I found this link I looked at it for a second only to think it was another single-button mouse. My bad.

Still, I wouldn't feel comfortable using a mouse that looks like it only has one button. I can imagine how it feels, and it doesn't feel good! Well, don't knock it 'til you try it I suppose. And I'm not gonna try it any time soon :p

Credit to "Jake Lazaroff" for pointing me in the right direction first.

Seems some of you don't know how to read. Remember those times, when I made the News posts and I said about not e-mailing me asking when SRPG2 is out? Check out some of the e-mails I got in my inbox in the past month!

"Elo

soz i didnt use outlook, my pc woudnt do it.
I woz jus wonderin how much longer it will take 2 make Stick RPG 2 coz i luved da first one.
coud ya let me kno plz
THXS
Annoynmous"

"Hi I am just wondering when its gonna be out I mean i look at this site 1 a YEAR and it is never done!"

That second one was in fontsize 30 or something. Making your font bigger in your e-mails does not make me more inclined to reply!

This next one I had trouble deciphering:

"how come i foned a demo of sick 2 on a different and the trlere ses its out in 2004 whats goin on?"

Actually, I never was able to fully figure that one out. If someone knows, then e-mail me! Maybe you'll get a prize or something, but probably not...

But hey, I appreciate you guys really liked the 1st StickRPG and some of you are still happily enjoying it, what with the recent improvements and such introduced not long ago. But SRPG2 is so much more bigger and so much more ambitious...! It can be pretty difficult to make this game - that you guys are getting for free - with the limited resources available to us. You can go ahead and e-mail us with things like "Get off your ass and work" or "wtf dis game takin ages u guyz suckorz" but we're making the game... you're not.

Having said all that though, I do apologise for the lack of updates. This is, what, the first one in a month? And I don't even have any Media I can show at the moment. That's not that I DON'T have any... I'll see if I can show some next time I make a News post (which won't be another month!), promise!

But expect something pretty big coming your way soon... ish. I can't say what it is - you can e-mail me about it if you want, but I won't admit or deny anything, so your e-mails will be futile anyway! BWA HA HA!

Chill out, yo.

-Stuart Hart, SRPG2 Animator

PS: I'm currently not home at the moment, so please excuse any late or no replies to your e-mails!

PPS: I'm not at my usual computer - this News post might look a bit messed up!

Amigos!

Yeah, I know Mac users can hold the Ctrl or Apple button or whatever and then hit their mouse button making it act like a right-mouse click, but doesn't that just seem like a complete inconvenience? I also understand that you can buy 2-button mouses for the Mac, but they're not Apple products. Why don't Apple make one? A Mousewheel would be very beneficial too. Apple's a weird company...

I didn't say I don't like Macs and their users - just... the thing with the mouse! One button? They've screwed up there in my opinion.

Anyway... from what I can understand, the Mac users trying to get to the file can't seem to unRAR/unZip the download to be able to get to the Fla file and when they DO it gets corrupted or something - I'm not sure. So, a simple solution would be for you people to have access to the Fla file directly, rather than having to download something you need to unRAR/unZip.
PC users that don't have WinRAR will like this also.

Anyway, here they are:

Graffiti Template 1: download (14kb)
Graffiti Template 2: download (15kb)

IMPORTANT: I cannot stress this enough - you absolutely MUST read the RULES. You can read the rules for Template 1 HERE. Rules for Template 2 are HERE. They're pretty much the same - just a difference in the filesize limit.

Now for a bit of Media! Sorry, it's still Graffiti-related. It's all I seem to talk about these days. In these next few images you can get an idea of how your graffiti will look in the game:

Many many thanks to all that have contributed so far! There's some really fantastic stuff as you can see! Some of it really does blow me away.

Naturally, there might be a mistake when giving credit to those responsible, so if I've goofed up on the names throw me an e-mail and I'll get it sorted out for you right away. If you have some other question, aside from when this game is out, e-mail me anyway and I'll try to put your mind at rest!

Something about Macs...
Wednesday, July 27, 2005
Why does the mouse only have 1 button? Do most Mac users have only one finger and one thumb on their hand or something?

I've received the odd e-mail here and there concerning compatibility of the Graffiti Template file with Macs. Basically, Mac users can't seem to get it open for some reason. So I contacted my brother - a Mac user/follower - and he said he was able to open the .Rar and get to the .Fla file no problem. He opened the .Fla with Flash MX.

So I'm not sure what the deal if with you mac peeps that can't open the file. My knowledge on Mac systems is very limited, so there's really not a whole lot I can do about it!

Think you can drop some helpful info on the subject? Swing me an e-mail!

I graduated a couple days ago. You can see a geeky picture of me here!

Ok, that's out the way, let's never go there again!

I've received some BRILLIANT graffiti submissions lately - some truely excellent stuff. All I can say is... keep up the amazing work guys! I can't wait to use them in the game!

I've had a few requests from people that want to be able to make larger submissions, so I've gone ahead and made a 2nd template you more ambitious artists can download. It's basically exactly the same, only twice as long. Maybe a little too long...? Of course, you don't NEED to fill in the whole box... it's just there as a dimension limit, however I'd rather you didn't make the submissions small enought that they would be able to fit in the original template!

You can download the brand new 2nd Template here.

Again, you're going to need WinRAR to unRAR the file to access the .Fla and .Txt, and you'll also need Flash 5 or above to be able to open said .Fla file. You can download a 30-day trial version of the latest version of Flash here.

The original Template is still available, of course, and can be found here. However, I suggest those that have downloaded it in the past to re-download it as it has a slightly updated readme file which I would appreciate you all to take a look at!

That's quite a few downloads I got going for you there... let's make a list!

Graffiti Templates:
Original Graffiti Template
New Graffiti Template
- Twice as long as the original Template.

Programs required:
WinRAR
- Required to open the .Rar downloads that contain the Template file and readme file.

Flash MX 2004
- Required to open the .Fla file.

Did I mess up some of the links? E-Mail me!
Do you have a submission to give me? E-Mail me!
Do you have some random comment/question for me (if it's ANYTHING about SRPG2s release date, I will block you!)? E-Mail me!

Graffiti Submissions
Tuesday, June 28, 2005
Hiya kids!

Still getting e-mails asking when SRPG2 is out, and I'm still giving you all the same answer - it'll be out when we say it'll be out, and right now, we don't know when it will be out.

It's not that we can't say.
It's not that we're not allowed.
It's that we DON'T KNOW!

Anyway, let's move onto something slightly more interesting and less repetative - Graffiti Submissions.

I've been filtering out the good from the bad and I'm left with about 20-something pieces. I put together a picture showing those that I've decided are good enough to use in the game - view them here.

The version on the right is how it'll actually appear up against a wall in the game.

So I've got quite a few - enough to work with actually, but more is always welcome. There's plenty of wall space in the game, so download the template and keep sending submissions!

Just to clear things up - you DO require Flash to be able to open the file. The download isn't some magical little program I've built that allows you to create art for you to send me! I also won't accept anything you've made in Photoshop, or similar program, as image files are no use to me.

If you don't have Flash, you can download it, FREE, from Macromedia's Website. However, it'll expire after 30 days.

You'll also need WinRAR to be able to unzip the .Rar download. WinZIP is also an option.

For crying out loud, read the readme.txt file I've made for you! People seem to read only the first two rules and ignore the rest of the text. It's important that you name the Symbol and file correctly so that we can credit you properly. I've had to reject a lot of work because people won't spend a minute reading what they can and cannot do for their entry.

Any dang way, send your .Fla file to me when you've finished your submission. Maybe in a week or so, I'll make another post showing off more peoples work!

Take care now!

-Stuart Hart

Back in England
Monday, June 20, 2005
Hi there, kids! A slightly tanned, but undeniably still white Stu posting for the first time since he returned to his home country - which was early yesterday. I was a bit jet-lagged, so wasn't up to thinking of stuff to say and/or pulling together some stuff for you people to take a look at.

But that was yesterday! Today is... not yesterday! So I'm gonna post some crap.

By the way, yeah, I had a good time in Singapore - and Chiang Mai - and Langkawi.

I've yet to reply to all the e-mails I've received. I'll do that right after I finish this post. I've also received a number of new grafitti submissions. Again, I've yet to download and view them, but the more submissions the better! Thanks everyone, keep it up!

Now then, I promised some new Media and a promise is a promise... that's meant to be broken! Har har har! No new Media for you, punks!

I kid - here ya go:

WiP - Inner Ghetto 1

WiP - Inner Ghetto 2

Very incomplete stuff as you can see. Buildings are on top of each other when they should be behind, there's lots of rendering glitches that need fixing, the edge of the land needs defining... I could go on. Some stuff in the 1st picture are in a more complete state, such as the buildings on the far left and bottom-right corner. Everything else is completely untouched.

As for what this place is actually meant to be... it's supposed to be a more run down and seedy part of the city. If you're looking for drugs - either for buying or for selling - this will be the place to be. If you have money to waste then you can enjoy yourself at one of the many local strip clubs on offer.

Though, watching a pink stick figure dance about isn't what I would call arousing. Some fool's gotta animate them though - that's me. Hmm... I wonder if I can convince some ladies to do some motion capture for me...?

Anyway, to be honest, I've not worked on this particular location in a while. I actually finished the modelling of this one long ago. Obviously, I can't have worked on it during the 3 weeks I was away, but even before then it's been a while since I've sat down with this piece. What... I had my University Course to worry about! Plus there's been other Flash related work I've had to do... ya can't rush these things!

So yes, admitably, development of this game is shifting along slowly but surely. We understand it's been a long time and we thank you for your continued patience. But seriously - stop asking us when it's going to be done, because when we know it's going to be done we'll tell you ASAP! Until then, sit tight, try to enjoy my rambling and take comfort in that we ARE working on this title and we're not giving up on it like some of you may think.

Right, I'm gonna go ahead and reply to all the e-mails I was sent, download the rest of the grafitti submissions and I'll be back in a few days with a post showing off the grafitti submissions I have selected to use in the game!

That doesn't mean the contest is closing though - I just want to show off your work! You can still make a submission and then e-mail it to me!

-Stuart Hart

Not in the country!
Saturday, May 28, 2005
Hey there, people - Stu talking to you all the way from sunny Singapore!

Yes folks, I'm currently out of the country at this moment at the start of a 3 week holiday on the opposite side of the planet (depending where you are, that is). This means I can't get any work done, nor can I open any graffiti submissions being sent in from now. That's not to tell you to stop sneding them though - please do! My current situation simply means I can't open the files and I'll have to wait until I'm home before downloading (until then, they'll just sit in the Inbox).

I was actually gonna put together a sorta montage of the ones I have decided to use in the game - which is most of them - for you all to see, but unfortunately time constraints and other responsibilities got the better of me, so that'll have to wait! Oh well, perhaps when I get back to England I'll have even more submissions which I can add.

So... sorry for the lack of updates! I've had a few people write or talk to me about the lack of said subject. It's not much of an excuse, but with the end of my final semester come and gone, things had suddenly gotten hectic! Spending time with friends I'll never see again, spending time with friends I won't see for a LONG time... some random BBQ - but whatever, I'm sure hardly any of you care about my personal life!

Anyway, I promise - PROMISE - I'll have something new for you when I get back into the country. I think it's about time for a bit more Media for you guys to see. So, yeah... maybe something for you guys to look forward to??

Keep chilling for now everyone - I need to... it's damn hot here.

-Stuart Hart

Oops
Sunday, May 1, 2005
Seems I screwed up the link for the graffiti template you guys need to download if you want to make and send me stuff. I messed it up TWICE in fact. Oh well... hopefully, this link will work instead. Sorry about that!

-Stuart Hart

I want YOU to send your graffiti to me!
Sunday, May 1, 2005
Hiya fellas - SRPG2 Artist/Animator Stuart Hart updating the front page once again!

Sorry there hasn't been a News post for a while - the last 2 or 3 weeks have been really hectic for me as my University course draws to an end. This is also why I haven't been replying to your e-mails - I'll get on with that right after I've done this News post. I've got about 2 weeks to go at Uni and then it's job hunting time! Hopefully now though I'll have much more time to work on SRPG2.

Anyway, time for something a bit more exciting! I'm giving you all the chance to have your art skills featured in StickRPG2! Specifically, I'm looking for creative and interesting looking Graffiti Art that will be plastered all over the walls of the StickRPG2 world.

So, if you want to have a go at getting some of your fancy work into StickRPG2, download this file (you'll need WinRAR to unzip the files). Be sure to read the Readme file that contains rules and limits I expect you guys to follow! Open up the .Fla file (which will work on Flash 5 or above) and start editing the only existing Symbol in the Library!

I'm looking for some really good ones here - I won't accept just anything! I'll e-mail those that send me good ones.

I'm afraid that there's no prize as such, except that you're name WILL be there in the credits for StickRPG2. Erm... maybe we'll make it so that those that contribute will start off with more money than usual in the game, but right now I can't make any big promises!

When you're done with your work, send the file to me! I would also prefer that you use WinRAR to compress the file before sending it (Fla files compress really well).

So what are you waiting for? Get the file and go nuts with your graffiti skills!

On another note, I've updated the journal for your reading pleasure. Enjoy!

-Stuart Hart

The burning question...
Tuesday, April 12, 2005
Hi folks - SRPG2 Artist/Animator Stuart Hart at your service once more!

We still get floods of e-mails asking the exact same darn question - when will SRPG2 be released? As far as I'm aware, there's still no set release date for SRPG2, but I'm pretty certain to say that it'll be out this year. I don't know what month - don't ask me. SRPG2 is not the only thing we're working on here at XGenStudios.

We also get a lot of e-mails from people with their own ideas they would like to see in the game. Keep in mind I'm just Mr. Graphics and don't have any control over gameplay features. However, that's not to say that your ideas go completely ignored - I still read every idea you guys send me and should I see one that's truely interesting, I'll pass it on to the right people.

Anyhow, I uploaded a very very slightly more complete SRPG2 development journal. It only has one more entry, but for those interested, you can check it out here.
You'll need to scroll down a bit to find the new entry.

And for those that don't like reading and would rather just watch something a bit more stimulating, you can check out an animation blend test I made recently. There's no preloader for it, so don't be too surprised if it stutters at all.

Also, don't forget to check out the StickRPG 2 Combat System Demo!

Enjoy!

Comments? More questions (other than the usual, please!)? E-mail me.

Stu's Stick RPG 2 Journal
Monday, April 4, 2005
Hi there folks - SRPG2 Artist/Animator Stuart Hart here!

Today is my 21st birthday, so I thought I'd do something a bit special and use my new found powers to make a little News post.

Now then, it's been brought to my attention recently that some folks think my 3D background art is in fact pixel art. Wrong wrong wrong! They're created as 3D models in Discreets (now discontinued) plasma and rendered out as Swf files that can then be imported directly into Flash. They then go through a touch-up process, cleaning up any stuff that doesn't look visually attractive and adding lots of detail that isn't possible, or is simply more difficult, during modelling.
The end result is a standard vector graphic - sometimes with animation - in Flash that can be rotated, scaled, transformed etc without losing image quality.
And that's that. It's not pixel art.

In other News, I've actually been keeping a very part-time journal on the development of SRPG2 (on the graphical side). I do plan on releasing the whole thing should we ever do a kind of "behind the scenes" for SRPG2, but for now, you can read the first entry here (which dates back to August 2004).

Got a comment? Mail me your thoughts!
